]Also, little things like indicating what upgrades have been completed, and increasing the food limit seem to point towards Blizzard’s want to make “micro-ing” and “macro-ing” easier for the player, and a lot more convenient for the casual player. One feature I found annoying was the fact that you can’t get experience beyond level five through creeping. To be fair though, I reckon it’s justified as it encourages players to get more involved in skirmishes with the other player, thereby ensuring quicker and more pulse-pounding games.

The Frozen Throne isn't just a bunch of new missions added to the original game. Even though fans of the game would have just been happy with all 26 new missions if they had no enhancements whatsoever, Blizzard throws a lot of new goodies into The Frozen Throne. Again there are missions just as in Reign of Chaos where you get to play adventures with the different races of Azeroth. The Orc missions stray from the classic RTS gaming of WarCraft however, and instead are presented as a mini-RPG that is a showcase for the great new world editor available in The Frozen Throne that not only allows you to create your own maps, but entire campaigns complete with customized
cut-scenes and voiceovers.

So what's RPS all about then? RPS adds a selection of characters that have some permanence - you carry them between levels - and set of extra abilities; they can level up (as they gain experience in-game), they can find and carry extra items (to add abilities / improve their stats) and they generally kick much butt in combat. Indeed, in a multiplayer game, levelling up your hero quickly can mean the difference between survival and defeat; it's not uncommon for a well handled hero to turn the tide against seemingly insurmountable odds.

On the multiplayer front, you have a variety of new maps to choose from when conducting Warcraft III wars online; Battle.net supports clans that can include up to 100 players, in addition to automated tournaments that run on a regular basis. And if you enjoy building your own maps and trading them with friends, you’ll discover a variety of improvements in the World Editor, including the ability to create custom campaigns that feature cutscenes and voice-overs.

For those who loved the naval battles at sea in Warcraft 2, will be happy to know that the naval fleet is making a comeback in this expansion pack. Players will be able to take advantage of some of the new skills and abilities and use them against their foes, by having access to a destroyer, a battleship and a troop transport.

The green-skinned Orcs were once a noble race, until they were corrupted by the Legion. The Orcs were brought from the world of Draenor to Azeroth to engage in war with the humans. Eventually the war was ended, and peace resided between the humans and Orcs. A young Orc warchief, named Thrall, was raised by the humans, and after several years eventually escaped. His desire is to free his people from the Legions grasp and become the noble people they once were so many centuries ago.

The Night Elf Sentinels have grown stronger with their new hero, the Warden. As the name suggests, the Warden is a jailor for the Night Elves, now tasked with searching for escaped captors. The Mountain Giant is one of the new units, a creature composed of stone and stout flora, capable of taking tons of damage. The sentinels of the forest also gain access to the Faerie Dragon, a small quick flying unit.

The missions throughout the game make good use of both the races and their heroes. One mission is your typical build-up-a-base-and-destroy-the-enemy-base, while in another mission all you have available is your hero and perhaps a few units. Also the new heroes are also a welcomed addition to the game. In particular the new Undead hero, the Crypt Lord, which gives the Undead a much needed tough guy (Yes, I’m an undead kind of guy). The new heroes also add to the tactical aspect of the game.

If you enjoyed Warcraft III's single-player campaigns, you'll be pleased to know that The Frozen Throne offers at least as much if not more single-player material. The campaign picks up where Warcraft III left off, in the aftermath of the banishment of the burning legion. The renegade half-demon Illidan and the death knight Arthas are at the center of the story, as both of these power-hungry characters are seeking to take control of a world already ravaged by conflict. You play the campaign missions linearly, just like in Warcraft III, starting with the night elf sentinels, then moving on to the remnants of the human alliance, and finally taking control of the undead scourge. There are more than two dozen sizeable missions in all.

Outside of the main three campaigns, which follow the Frozen Throne story arc, sits the Orc campaign. This is mainly because Blizzard just didn't feel that they had anything to do with that particular struggle. It works out well, not only because things weren't forced, but because we now get a good glimpse into the future of the Orcs as they begin to rebuild their civilization, this time without the yoke of the demons dragging them down. This campaign is definitely more RPG than the rest of them, almost too much so when enemies start to respawn. Regardless, I still had some good fun with the quests and campaign in general even if it was tiresome at times.

The Night Elf campaign, however, has an interesting ending, one that might surprise a some people based on the much publicized premise of the expansion that Illidan and Arthas are racing to get to the Frozen Throne of the Icecrown Glacier. As the game progresses, the story becomes more tangled with the amphibious race of Naga as a key player.

The 3D units introduced in WC3 haven't changed, really, and the new units don't look any more detailed than their predecessors. The emphasis remains on compatibility with mid-range systems, so you won't have to go buy a new video card or processor just to play this game. Battle.net play is rock-solid from a network aspect provided you're not downloading music on KaZaa or anything. (Or porn. - 2Lions) It can get a little hairy when 6 armies collide in a multiplayer game, but other than that, there are no serious network issues. |
